Fire Risk, Climate Pressures & Community

What an epic turn out!

Our last event with @qmtbc saw 80+ mountain bikers come together to watch a new Patagonia film and chat about global and local climate pressures.

As a community out riding in our fragile environment week in, week out, we’re perfectly placed to advocate for and take action on climate change. We can be part of the solution; the first step is understanding.

For many, this was the first time they’d been introduced to the conversation of fire risk in the basin, why its progressing, and how to manage it. We may not have all the answers, but sparking conversations about solutions at a policy and community level is a good place to start.

Having such a great turn out and genuine engagement shows the power we can wield as a community when we are informed, stand up and take action together.

Thanks to QMTBC’s president Fraser Gordan for sharing your insight on our local situation and to Forward’s Izzy and Daisy for explaining the unique factors which lead to heightened fire risk in the Whakatipu Basin.

Next up, we have a QMTBC fundraiser this weekend with a MTB Trivia Pub Quiz at Searchlight Brewery from 5pm. Let’s see if we can beat 80 attendees!
